Herbal Mocktails

Putting herbal synergy into practice.

Let's Get Mixing

Now that we’ve discussed in depth the importance of both herbal energetics and synergy within formulations, let’s now dive into some fun and simple herbal preparations that you can try at home! Rather than simply making a tea or tincture, why not incorporate these ideas by making mocktails? Not only are they delicious of course, but they also give you an opportunity to be more deliberate with self care and wellness as you take the time to formulate these drinks. I’ve decided to share with you some of my go-to herbal mocktails, one with energizing citrus and warming ginger, the other with cooling blackberries and soothing honey. With that, let’s get into it!

The zest and juice of two blood oranges

The zest and juice of two lemons

500ml of coconut water

2 Tbsp of freshly grated ginger

Ice

  1. With your favourite pitcher or bowl on hand, zest and juice both the oranges and lemons straight in. Don’t worry about straining the pulp or pulling out seeds, we will be straining this mixture before we pour.

  2. Grate your ginger ahead in, using either a rasp or a grater and make sure to get as much of the juice and pulp into the pitcher as you can.

  3. Add in your coconut water, and let this mixture sit for about 10 minutes. By steeping the ginger with the citrus and coconut water, it will ensure you’ve extracted almost all of the volatile oils.

  4. Add lots of ice to your glass of choice, and with a fine mesh strainer pour your mixture in, mix and enjoy!

Note: Feel like getting fancy with it? Add a lemon wedge or two and rim the glass with some raw cane sugar. There’s no wrong way of making an herbal mocktail, turn on some tunes and get energized!

Cooling Blackberry & Honey Mocktail

The zest and juice of one lemon

Roughly a handful of blackberries

One can or 250ml of your favourite sparkling water

Honey to taste

Ice

  1. In a glass of your choosing add your berries, lemon juice, zest and honey.

  2. Using the back of a spoon, muddle your ingredients together until everything is incorporated.

  3. At this stage, feel free to strain out any seeds or berry bits if you’re not into that kind of thing. (or don't, we won't judge)

  4. Crack open a can of your favourite sparkling water and pour it over top.

  5. Add as much or as little ice as you want.

  6. Give everything a good stir and Voila!

Note: Wanna take this drink to the next level? Add a sprig of mint or thyme with a splash of fresh orange juice.

As always, when it comes to using herbal products and supplements, the importance and necessity to consult your healthcare provider prior to use is invaluable. Herbs may have side effects, cause individual sensitivities, or interact with medications.  I am an herbalist, my goal is to help you support your overall health and wellness. I am NOT a licensed health care practitioner, my consultations do NOT replace those of a healthcare provider. I cannot stress enough how western medicine and traditional wellness can and should be used hand in hand. Thank you and stay safe.
